Rivers, Lakes and Sewers¶
In the Rivers, Lakes and Sewers dialogue (below) you can link MIKE SHE to a MIKE 1D model. The MIKE 1D model can include rivers, a collection system (sewers), or both.

The check boxes under the heading "Coupling" are used to inform MIKE SHE about what is included in the MIKE 1D model.
MIKE 1D is the numerical engine used for hydraulic modeling in MIKE+. Therefore, MIKE 1D models are built using MIKE+. Models built in MIKE+ must be exported to the m1dx format to be used in MIKE SHE. This is done using the Export functionality in MIKE+.
If the MIKE 1D model includes a collection system model that will be coupled to MIKE SHE, the .m1dx file must be accompanied by a .couple file exported from the same MIKE+ model. The .couple file must have the same name as the .m1dx file and must be located in the same directory.
Older MIKE 1D river models, developed using the decommissioned products MIKE HYDRO River or MIKE 11 can still be used in MIKE SHE. The .mhydro and .sim11 extensions are still supported in the Rivers, Lakes and Sewers dialogue.
When linking to a sim11 file, the directory in which the sim11 file is located should include the other setup files, including:
- the river network file (.nwk11),
- the cross-section database (.xns11),
- the boundary condition file (.bnd11) and
- the hydrodynamic setup file (.hd11).
In the Rivers, Lakes and Sewers dialogue, there are two Inundation Areas options These options are always available for input but are only used if you have made accompanying specifications in the MIKE+ Groundwater couplings. These options are:
- Flood codes - a map used for the direct inundation of flooded areas in MIKE SHE based on water levels, and
- Bathymetry - a detailed topography file that can be used to modify the defined topography with a more detailed flood plain topography in areas where Flood Codes have been defined.
More information about coupling to rivers can be found in Section Coupling of MIKE SHE and a MIKE 1D River Model and in the MIKE+ documentation.
Details for specifying linkages between MIKE SHE and a MIKE+ collection system model are provided in section Working with Sewers - User Guide and in the MIKE+ documentation.
